Books

my book philosophy

MR, TOMONOSHi! Drawing

Throughout the history of humanity, no hardware or software has changed more lives than the book. I recognize the transformative power of books. Without them, I would never have gained the knowledge needed to pursue mastery of my crafts. As an author and illustrator, my intentions are to create playful and entertaining experiences for my readers, using the highest quality sustainable materials.

As someone who blends art and technology to build imaginative and immersive worlds, I understand that, like all hardware and software, books need to be updated. There's so much space on the shelves for new stories, new ideas, and new reading experiences.

I started writing books with the idea of representation in mind but quickly realized that a book is only in the representation category when it is done by someone who doesn't look like me. All of my work is a reflection of my experiences, my community, the people I have met, and the places I have been.

I am merely reflecting.

When people who aren't Black see Black characters in books, they often assume that these books aren't for them. That's not true in my work. Read my books and you'll quickly realize that my characters are for everyone to love and enjoy.

They just be Black.

I represent a culture of people in a country that once made it illegal for us to learn to read and write. I do both every day! Books were never for us, and I never forget that as I am working. We are centuries behind in the race to occupy the shelves with books that are true reflections of our existence, books that reflect the spectrum of Blackness and our Black experiences.

I am happy to be in the race.

I believe that books are windows to the world. I have been to so many places and met so many people through reading. I want to do the same for others, creating windows into my imagination and my worlds.

I think of myself as a travel agent, taking you places that no one else can but me. Although entertaining the reader is my first thought, I love to empower and inspire them along the way.

My books are family entertainment.

Every page I illustrate with the eye of a film director and the spirit of Saturday morning cartoons. All of my work is very animated; they feel like moving images. Nothing is stagnant.

Every book is a state-of-the-art product to me; every detail matters.

The quality of materials used to construct my books is not only the most beautiful but also the most sustainable in the industry. When illustrating, my intentions are to build worlds that jump off the pages and make you want to jump into the pages. I want to engage and activate the reader's imagination as soon as they pick it up.

I started my own printing and publishing company so that I wouldn't have to ask for permission or be told what my books should be creatively. I had a vision. I had a goal.

Over the years, I have learned countless lessons in the art of publishing. I have brought my books to life from concept to manufacturing the final product, shipping, and marketing. It has been a super expensive experience. However, over the years, I have sold over 80,000 books.

It has been a struggle to get people to care about books, to care about reading. There have been moments when I thought about giving up on books because it just hasn't been good business.

But I love the craft, I love books, and I love reading. This passion drives me forward, and I am committed to continuing my journey, creating worlds that inspire and entertain, and bringing the magic of books to readers everywhere.

Adventure Awaits…

with love + imagination
