the case

study

    • Background: World PLAY-DOH Day, celebrated annually on September 16, was created by Hasbro in 2006 to honor the childhood staple that continues to captivate the imaginations of millions of children - and artists of all ages - across the globe.

    • Objective: To create a stop motion video that shares enthusiasm for the Play-Doh brand.

      • Commission: In 2017, commissioned to create a stop motion video for World PLAY-DOH Day.

      • Personal Connection: At the time, my daughter and I were playing with Play-Doh every day, which inspired the project.

    • Inspiration: Inspired by old stop motion clay movies, wondered if the same could be done with Play-Doh.

    • Partnership: Collaborated with Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, renowned for their stop motion films.

    • Role: Creatively directed, co-directed, wrote, and produced the piece.

    • Process:

      • Medium: Stop motion is a hands-on, labor-intensive medium that articulates imagination in real time but in slow motion.

      • Challenges: The endurance required for stop motion is often overlooked; it is a human's medium, not computer-generated.

      • Production: The 45-second video took weeks to complete, showcasing the labor aspects of the process.

    • Creative Achievement: The limitations of the material pushed our imaginations to new heights, aligning perfectly with the spirit of World PLAY-DOH Day.

      • Reception: The video was a huge hit with fans and Play-Doh loved it.

    • Reflection: The project was a beautiful labor of love, embodying the essence of Play-Doh and the creative process.

      • Future Aspirations: If feasible, would love to do more projects in stop motion due to its unique, human-centric nature.

Design

Philosophy

I believe that stop motion animation is the most human theater experience next to actual theater. It is a hands-on medium that requires physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual engagement, making it a true labor of love.

The limitations of the materials, such as Play-Doh, push our imaginations to new heights. I embrace these constraints as opportunities to innovate and explore new creative possibilities.

Stop motion is a medium that celebrates the beauty of handcrafted art. Each frame is meticulously crafted, reflecting the dedication and passion of the artists involved.

At the heart of my work is the desire to tell compelling stories that resonate with audiences. Whether it's a 45-second video or a full-length feature, the narrative is always the driving force behind the visuals.

the creative

Process

    • Inspiration: Drawing inspiration from personal experiences and classic stop motion films.

    • Brainstorming: Collaborating with creative partners to generate ideas and refine the concept.

    • Storyboarding: Creating detailed storyboards to visualize the narrative and plan each shot.

    • Scriptwriting: Crafting a script that captures the essence of the story and the characters.

    • Design and Planning: Designing the characters, sets, and props, and planning the production schedule.

    • Collaboration: Partnering with talented studios and artists, such as Stoopid Buddy Stoodios, to bring the vision to life.

    • Animation: Bringing the characters and sets to life through meticulous stop motion animation. Each frame is carefully crafted to ensure fluid and expressive movement.

    • Direction: Overseeing the creative direction, co-directing, and ensuring that the vision is faithfully executed.

    • Attention to Detail: Paying close attention to every detail, from the smallest prop to the overall composition, to create a cohesive and visually stunning piece.

    • Editing: Assembling the frames into a seamless sequence, adding sound effects, music, and any necessary visual effects.

    • Review and Refinement: Reviewing the final product, making any necessary adjustments, and ensuring that the piece meets the highest standards of quality.

    • Launch: Releasing the final video to the public, often in conjunction with special events like World PLAY-DOH Day.

    • Feedback: Gathering feedback from audiences and stakeholders to understand the impact and reception of the work.

    • Reflection: Reflecting on the process and outcomes, identifying areas for improvement, and celebrating the successes.

"open a can of imagination" and unleash your own creative potential.

The experience of creating the World PLAY-DOH Day video reaffirmed my love for stop motion animation. It's a medium that truly brings imagination to life in a tangible, hands-on way.

If resources allowed, I would love to explore more ambitious stop motion projects. Imagine a full-length feature film or a series of shorts that continue to push the boundaries of creativity and storytelling!

Working with talented teams like Stoopid Buddy Stoodios was incredibly rewarding. I look forward to future collaborations with other visionary artists and studios to create even more magical and captivating content.

Sharing the joy of stop motion with others is a dream of mine. Hosting workshops or creating educational content to inspire the next generation of animators would be a fantastic way to give back to the community.

Continuously experimenting with new techniques and materials to enhance the stop motion process. The possibilities are endless, and each project offers a chance to learn and grow.

Ultimately, my goal is to celebrate and nurture creativity in all its forms. Whether through stop motion or other artistic endeavors, I aim to inspire others to unleash their imaginations and create something truly special.

Adventure Awaits…
